CV
In his work as a conductor and musicologist, Knut Andreas combines theory with practice in many areas, always with the aim of inspiring a wide audience with and for music.
After his musical training on the violin, viola, piano and bassoon, and following his studies in music education and German language and literature at the University of Potsdam, he continued his education at the University of Music and Theatre "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig. After completing his studies, he accepted a position as personal advisor and assistant to the general music director of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In Neubrandenburg, he co-founded the international youth orchestra meeting NBJot "Baltikum" in 2004, which he accompanied as manager until 2008.
His interest in musicology, especially the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, led Knut Andreas to the Institute for Musicology at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, where he wrote his doctoral thesis on the life and work of the composer Paul Graener. He acted as manager for the transatlantic music conference "crosscurrents: American and European Music in Interaction, 1900-2000", organised by the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich in cooperation with Harvard University and the Paul Sacher Foundation Basel, the second part of which took place in Munich in May 2009 with guests such as Paul Hillier, Bruce Brubaker and Steve Reich. In Munich he also directed the choir and orchestra of the Institute for Musicology.
Since 1998, Knut Andreas has been the artistic director of the Collegium musicum Potsdam symphony orchestra. With the orchestra, he not only initiated public dress rehearsals with introductions to works that precede the symphony concerts and in which he familiarises the audience more closely with the works to be heard, but in the summer of 2009 he also launched the open-air festival "Klassik am Weberplatz", which has since gathered around 2,000 listeners outdoors every year. Since 2012, the orchestra's intercultural exchange, which brings together artists from both countries under the title "Brandenburg-Brasilien", has attracted international attention.
In his orchestral work, Knut Andreas also focuses on the musical education of children and young people, as well as in the area of social welfare with the "Sinfonieorchester für Senioren" series, which was launched in spring 2014 and once again enables older people in need of care to experience a symphony orchestra live.
As a conductor, Knut Andreas has made guest appearances in the Netherlands, with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Slovenia and with various orchestras in Brazil, including the Orquestra de Câmara OPUS, the Orquestra Sinfônica de Nova Lima and the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de Campinas. As a regular guest conductor, he works with the Orquestra Sinfônica da UNICAMP (Campinas) and the Orquestra Sinfónica de Ribeirão Preto. In October 2016 he recorded a CD of contemporary trumpet concertos by Brandenburg and Brazilian composers with the Brazilian trumpeter Paulo Ronqui in Campinas.
In 2015, Knut Andreas received a scholarship from the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg (InterStip) to realise a socio-cultural orchestra project with children and young people from socially vulnerable backgrounds in a district of the metropolis of São Paulo.
In July 2012, the Brazilian Academy of Literature and Art "Paranapuã" (Rio de Janeiro) honoured Knut Andreas with the Order of Cultural Merit, recognising his achievements in connecting Brazilian and German artists as well as his commitment to making Brazilian music known in Germany. In the same year, the state capital Potsdam honoured the work of the Collegium musicum Potsdam symphony orchestra with the Honorary Service Award for Cultural Commitment.
As an author, Knut Andreas has worked with the Audite and CPO CD labels for several years. In August 2014, the conductor took over the direction of the Youth Symphony Orchestra Berlin, based at the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium, with whose chamber orchestra he won the 1st Michelangelo International Music Festival Firenze (Italy) in spring 2017. Between 2011 and 2017, he taught as a lecturer in the Cultural Work degree programme at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences. In June 2017, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Music History and Music Management in the Cultural Work programme by the President of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.
