A successfulStart: New Course for Media and Information Services Specialists (Archive)

Blick auf den Tisch in der Archivwerkstatt

The start of our part-time qualification course for media and information services specialists (FaMI) specialising in archives was a complete success! From the 6th to the 9th of March 2024, we welcomed a total of 23 motivated participants from all over Germany to the first face-to-face event at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.

For the first time, the extra-occupational FaMI qualification programme is being run in cooperation between the ZEW and the Brandenburg State Office for Archives and Public Libraries. Participants will receive comprehensive training over the course of two years – in both face-to-face and digital learning units.

Our aim is to provide those working in archives or similar institutions without a specialist archiving qualification with a sound basic qualification.

The course began with an introduction to the basics of the profession, led by Prof. Dr. Michael Scholz and Sabine Stropp. Topics such as the status, legal form, organisation and tasks of archives were covered, accompanied by a tour of the archive workshop. On the second day, further basics were taught: Dirk Ullmann introduced the organisation of archives and gave an overview of historical auxiliary sciences. Records management was the focus of the third day, led by Susanna Wurche. Sabrina Heeren-Simon and Jens Reiher concluded the opening session with an introduction to the theory and practice of archival cataloguing.

Visits to the digitisation laboratory and the workshops of the degree programme Conservation and Restauration offered additional varied and practical insights into related areas of work.

We look forward to the upcoming modules and to discovering and shaping the world of archival work together with the prospective FaMI!
