With the publication of the new education plan "The extended principles of elementary education" by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MBJS), Brandenburg is sending a strong signal in favour of child-oriented and scientifically based early childhood education. The education plan was developed under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr Frauke Hildebrandt, professor at the Department of Social and Educational Sciences at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences, and finalised after an intensive consultation process with daycare stakeholders in Brandenburg.

The new education plan is designed for all ages and applies to crèches, kindergartens, after-school care centres, child day care and alternative child day care services. It offers practical suggestions and examples of how everyday situations can be pedagogically organised and systematically linked with topics from different areas of education. For the first time, this provides educational professionals with clear guidelines on how to organise their educational mission based on children's rights.

Prof. Dr Frauke Hildebrandt, Professor of Childhood Education: " To ensure that educational opportunities are less determined by social background in the future, it is important to provide even better support for the development of our children's skills. The new Brandenburg education plan is geared towards what is really needed in practice and therefore addresses typical everyday situations. This was particularly important to our authors in view of the current challenges in child daycare and has been confirmed by the positive feedback from professionals."

The education plan describes everyday educational situations such as playing, eating, hygiene, children's circles or tidying up on the one hand, and classic educational areas such as language, maths, movement or aesthetics on the other. It replaces the "Principles of Elementary Education", which were first published in 2004.

In 2022, the MBJS commissioned the Institute for Further Education, Research and Development (IFFE) at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the German League for the Child to draw up the education plan. Under the leadership of Prof Dr Frauke Hildebrandt and Bianka Pergande, a broad-based team of academic authors developed the draft, which was presented in August 2023. In February 2024, the MBJS initiated a comprehensive participation process with daycare centre stakeholders in Brandenburg. This comprised 22 events and an online survey in which almost 2,000 people took part. The constructive feedback from this process was incorporated into the final development of the education plan.

To implement the new education plan, the Sozialpädagogisches Fortbildungsinstitut Berlin-Brandenburg (SFBB) will launch a comprehensive training campaign for educators and daycare centre providers. In addition, the contents of the education plan will be taught in all SFBB training courses and in the specialist schools for nursery teachers.
