Democratic Drinks: Radical Masculinity Using the Example of Incel

A lecture by Hanna Vatter followed by a discussion.

INCEL (INvoluntary CELibate) is the name given to a growing international group of young men who postulate a claim to love, sexuality and offspring in relation to women. They deny women their long-won right to physical and sexual self-determination. INCEL propagate that women are inherently weak-minded, malicious and scheming. In order to abolish the supposed oppression of women, male domination is therefore needed, which in the ideal society would manage women's bodies and divide them "fairly" between men. In addition, the white man should finally resume his "natural" position as a social authority – both in the family and as a fascist leader in the authoritarian state. The lecture illuminates the connection between right-wing authoritarianism and gender using the example of the incel and links it to the structural narcissism of our society in a way that is critical of patriarchy.

"Democratic Drinks" is a university-wide series of events during the Democracy Semester at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. With short inputs and small activities, the individual events encourage an open exchange on current topics of democracy.

Students and lecturers at FHP are organising the summer semester 2024 together under the motto #Democracy! All members of the university are invited to actively engage with issues of democracy, diversity and openness through courses, events, research projects and workshops.
