Sustainable building: The building culture of the future is the culture of conversion - from "grey" to "golden" energy

As part of the lecture series "Sustainable Building", Rainer Nagel from the Bundesstiftung Baukultur will speak on 4 December 2024 about the importance of a high-quality conversion culture. The lecture will shed light on how existing buildings can make a decisive contribution to sustainable construction through their stored grey energy and cultural values.

Existing buildings are not only tangible, but also intangible assets that are characterised by stories and biographies. A successful remodelling culture preserves these identities and adds new ones, releasing the so-called "golden energy" of the existing buildings. Buildings and places with specific historical and atmospheric characteristics can thus provide impetus for a contemporary design language.

The lecture also addresses the challenges of our time - from the energy transition to demographic change and globalisation - and shows how dealing with existing buildings can contribute to solving these problems. Building culture is understood as a holistic approach that requires interdisciplinary planning, transparent processes and early public participation.

With a focus on the preservation and further development of existing buildings, the lecture argues in favour of a building practice that combines identity and value retention with functional and ecological improvements - and thus creates the basis for a sustainable building culture.

The event series
Sustainable building is a very broad topic and covers much more than just energy efficiency or the choice of suitable materials. Involving all users and decision-makers in the design process and needs analysis is just as much a part of it as considering existing resources throughout their entire life cycle and the intelligent reuse of existing buildings and their infrastructures.

In collaboration with the Brandenburg Chamber of Architects, the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam  (FHP) has been organising an event on the topic of "Sustainable Building" twice a semester since 2022. Each event begins with a specialist lecture, followed by an open Q&A session and discussion in which both representatives from the profession and students can comment on the topics raised.
