Sports Reception 2025 - Potsdam universities honour successful athletes

President's Council
Awards

Two Olympic gold medals and one bronze in Paris! There was great jubilation at the medals won by canoeist Jacob Schopf and rower Maren Völz. The two university students are among the 72 athletes from Potsdam's universities who will now be honoured once again in a special way at the 2025 Sports Reception. The University (UP), the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (FHP) and the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences for Sport and Management (FHSMP) will be hosting the event on 25 February at 5 pm in the Auditorium Maximum on the Am Neuen Palais campus. Science Minister Dr Manja Schüle will be one of the first to congratulate the students when Presidents Prof. Oliver Günther, Ph.D. from the UP and Prof. Dr Michael Barsuhn from the FHSMP as well as FHP President Prof. Dr Eva Schmitt-Rodermund honour the achievements of their students.

"The highlight of the past sports year was undoubtedly the participation of our students in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris," says Dr Petra Bischoff-Krenzien, Head of University Sports in Potsdam: "It's something very special to see top student athletes, who you also know personally, compete with the best in the world, achieve excellent placings and even bring home medals. This should fill every university with pride and encourage appropriate support for dual careers."
A special form of support is the Young Talent Award, which is linked to a scholarship and is awarded annually by the Sports Chapter of the Universitätsgesellschaft Potsdam e.V. at the Sports Reception. Since 2022, the prize has been awarded to students who not only excel in training, but also in their studies.

As the number of cross-university competition teams has increased since 2015, the organisers of the reception have decided to honour the athletes from Potsdam's universities with a joint ceremony from this year onwards. The successes at the FISU World University Championships Canoe Sports and the German University Championships Handball will be particularly emphasised this time. Other highlights of the past year were the first-time participation of a Potsdam delegation in the German University Championships in fencing and the organisation of the German University Championships in rowing by the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences for Sport and Management.
