Inaugural Lecture by Prof. Dr. Veit Köppen
On the occasion of his appointment as Professor of Library Science – Technologies, Systems and Services at the Department of Information Science, Prof. Dr. Veit Köppen will give his inaugural lecture entitled "Data Engineering in Research Data Management" on the 15th of January 2024.
Data engineering in research data management
Research data management (RDM) is one of the more recent obligations in scientific work. Even renowned research groups often do not have the resources to guarantee good RDM over many years. Academic libraries can use their experience and structural services to support researchers in this task. Handling the heterogeneity of research fields, but also supporting the rapidly growing volume of data, including good metadata management, play a key role in the success of solutions.
The presentation is dedicated to three selected aspects that address both the technical and communicative components in this context. For many challenges, there are already established standards and solutions at a technical level. In addition, new data structures are needed to cope with the volume of data. Support during the data engineering lifecycle reduces the workload for scientists and leads to sustainable collaboration between libraries and research. An important aspect in this context is the common understanding between the data creators and the data providers.
About the person
Veit Köppen began his academic career at the Humboldt University of Berlin, where he studied economics from 1998 to 2003. After completing his studies, he worked as a research assistant in the field of business informatics at the Free University of Berlin from 2003 to 2008.
In 2008, Veit Köppen successfully completed his doctorate in Business Intelligence at the Free University of Berlin. Until 2015, he was scientific coordinator and managing director at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Until 2020, he took on the role of Head of Department for IT Applications at Magdeburg University Library and studied Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin from 2016 to 2018.
From 2020 to 2023, he was Director of Digital Development and Network Affairs at the Berlin Central and Regional Library. Since 2023, Veit Köppen has been Professor of Library Science with a focus on technologies, systems and services at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.
