Double award for outstanding photo books: female design students celebrate successes
Students from the Design Department win German Photo Book Prize and German Youth Photo Prize: Photo books designed by students from the Department of Design have been honoured several times: The work of Saskia Darija Gettel and Samira Rehmert received significant honours at the prestigious "German Photo Book Prize 24|25" and the "German Youth Photo Prize".
Successes at the German Photo Book Award 24|25: Focus on creativity and research
On 25 November, 87 awards were presented in twelve categories at the German Photo Book Award in Regensburg. Two of the university's photo books were able to assert themselves from a total of 330 submitted titles:
- Saskia Darija Gettel was awarded bronze in the category "Illustrated book, photographic thesis" for her bachelor's thesis "The Poison Book". Under the supervision of Prof Wiebke Loeper and Constanze Hein, Gettel researched the relationship between the individual and repressive society. The starting point was the story of her grandfather, who ran a poisonous snake farm in the GDR.
- Samira Rehmert received a silver medal in the "Illustrated Book, Student Project" category for her photo book "THE HOLY LAND". Inspired by a semester abroad in Jerusalem, her book focuses on the privileges, curiosity and contrasts she experienced during her walks through the city.
Awards at the German Youth Photo Prize: Outstanding young talents
The works of the two students have also already been honoured at the German Youth Photo Prize, which took place in September at the NRW Forum in Düsseldorf:
- Saskia Darija Gettel won the main prize in the "20 to 25 years" age category.
- Samira Rehmert was also honoured for "THE HOLY LAND".
- In addition, Laura Sauer, also a student of the Design department, received an honour in the new category "AI-generated images" for her work "Heiter weiter".
This year, 37 prizes were awarded in three categories. The jury selected 99 works from almost 4,500 submitted photos, photo projects and AI-generated works and awarded the best with a total prize money of 13,000 euros. The winners come from 13 federal states.
